WATCH OUT!! If you have little religious tolerance or you're a religious bigot, get the hell out!
If you have a theological mindset, then read on.
I have gotten a few emails regarding what the difference might be between a religion and a cult. Well, that's a darn good question. So here, I'm going to try to explain the difference...if any at all. As some of you may know, I profess neither Christian, nor Islam, nor Buddhist, nor any other religion one can conceive. As well, I do not confess atheist nor a cultist. So how is that you might ask? Well, think of me as.....a spectator on the opposite side of the fence looking in on such matters. But you're still saying, "Then you 'are' an atheist". Nope, not at all. Remember, an atheist doesn't believe in a god. Where as I, believe that 'maybe' there is something out there...an entity if you will. However, I do not follow patterns that would classify me as any one particular religion. So here we go.
Pay close attention to number 1. The key words there are, "belief in and worship of". Pay attention to number 2. The key word there is, "system". And finally, look at number 3. The key words there are, "pursuit or interest". So then, how can one sum it up? Simple. Religion is, pursuing a belief and worship of a greater power. That right there is religion, whether it be a religion of Christianity, of Islam, of Buddhism or parents or children or the latest and greatest video game system.
Again, here are the key words. Number 1 are, "religious worship". The key words for number 2 are, "strange, imposing and control". Finally, for number 3 are, "section of society". So how can you sum this up? A cult is simply, "A sect of society practicing a strange, imposing and controling religious worship".
The fact is, you can't have a cult without religion, not "a" religion, but "religion". However, you can have religion without having a cult. Now here comes a few words to think about. We got done establishing the difference between religion and a cult, so then, what is Christianity? I know your answer before you even thought about it. You're saying, "Of course, that's a religion". Well, IS it? What about Islam? What about Catholism? Afterall, these can be classified as a cult to some views for the fact that these could be seen as "imposing excessive control", or "something popular and fashionable". If this is all the case, then what the hell is a religion? Hmmmmm.......I think that is up to the reader to decide.
